Hurling legend Terence ‘Sambo’ McNaughton feels that if anyone is to ever help the game of Hurling then Jarlath Burns will be the man to do it.
Speaking on this week’s episode of The Left Wing Back Podcast, ‘Sambo’ feels that serious change needs to happen in order to develop the game properly.
“I have great faith in Jarlath Burns. I’ve met him quite a few times. I believe hand on heart and I hope to God I’m right, if there’s ever anybody going to do something for Hurling, it’ll be Jarlath.
“I hope he hears this. I hope I put pressure on him. I hope somebody takes that headline and plasters it all over Croke Park because I’m banking on Jarlath doing something for the game of Hurling because I worry for it in certain areas, I worry for it big time.” he said.
Sambo has concerns like many people that the same teams will just keep going up and down the respective tiers if something doesn’t change.
“I don’t want the counties to go back down to the Joe McDonagh, the Christy Ring, even though it is a great competition.
“We have no problem jumping in the car driving to watch a Munster final to see them players playing. And when you watch them and when you get the chance that they come to Antrim, it just adds to that, adds to the whole occasion and that’s what we need if we’re ever going to get up along with the Dublin’s and the Wexford’s who are just above us, that’s what we need to do.
“We need to exposure to this on a regular basis as much as we can. And the more kids see it, the more kids will take up the game, that’s how anything grows.” he added.
McNaughton was also strongly critical of the current way in which the game is being promoted.
“Whoever was in charge of Hurling this past hundred years, if you were paying them a wage, you would sack them in the morning.
“You’d give them their p45 and say, here, go and find another job.”
