Tailteann Cup Round 2

Carlow 0-13

Fermanagh 1-13

A gritty Carlow performance wasn’t enough on Saturday as a robust Fermanagh side took the spoils at Netwatch Cullen Park.

It was clear from the get go that a goal was going to be a massive score in this contest and it was Fermanagh who landed it just before half time when good footwork from Conor McShea saw him in on goal and his neat finish gave the visitors the impetus.

Prior to this, Carlow had big goal chances of their own. The first of these fell to Eric Molloy who was probably best off giving it to Darragh Foley after he had found himself in what looked like a better position and instead it was snuffed out. After this Paddy McDonnell had his effort blocked also and the missed chances were to prove costly.

Carlow to their credit kicked some eye catching scores throughout and particularly the first half efforts of Ross Dunphy and Jamie Clarke were unorthodox if not spectacular. Dunphy’s effort a modified bicycle kick while Clarke threw his effort up on to the left boot with one hand.

Old Leighlin duo Mikey Bambrick and Aaron Amond also notched fine first half scores while Darragh Foley picked off trademark frees, meaning Fermanagh just led 1-4 to 0-6 at the break.

The visitors were patient and at times very boring to watch, so much so that one young Carlow supporter asked his father could he go home with about 15 minutes left in the game.

They did however kick some neat points of their own with Che Cullen popping up twice from Full Back and Declan McCusker landing an impressive one also.

Darragh Foley was responsible for quality second half Carlow scores from play and frees while also bringing others into the game and Cormac Lomax, Clarke and sub Ciaran Moran’s efforts weren’t too shabby either.

In the end Carlow needed a goal but with half of County Fermanagh blocking up the goalmouth it never looked likely.

Carlow now look ahead to a meeting with Wicklow at a neutral venue where they’ll need a result and possibly a bit of luck elsewhere to progress depending on what happens.
