Carlow Intermediate Hurling Championship Round 5

Kildavin/Clonegal 1-12

Carlow Town 0-16

Spellman park hosted the winner takes all encounter between Kildavin/Clonegal and Carlow Town.

The visitors were quick out of the blocks with 5 unanswered points , 4 from Alex Delaney including 3 frees and 1 from play. The other coming from the stick of Kyle Nolan.

Podge Ryan got the hosts off the mark with a free in the 10th minute before Jake Nolan slotted one over the bar from an acute angle after a great delivery in from the aforementioned Podge Ryan, Podge himself landed another shortly after that.

Dan Murphy hit a fine score but Alex Delaney landed 2 long range frees , which cancelled out Kildavin’s good work.

2 more points from Podge Ryan and Kevin Sheppard either side of a John Phiri point, brought us to the break where Carlow Town led 8 points to 6 and now had the advantage of the strong wind in the second half.

The visitors got the first 3 points after the break, 2 from Kyle Nolan and a long distance strike from county player Conor Lawlor. Podge Ryan and Alex Delaney excelled with their free taking all night. And between the 40th and 50th minute, the pair exchanged 6 between them. 4 for Podge and 2 from Alex.

Kildavin seemed to be chasing the game all evening till the 59th minute when a high ball came into Daryl Roberts, was caught brilliantly he turned and worked his way through the defence and rattled the net which put last year’s Junior champions in the lead for the first time in the game.

Carlow town hit back immediately with 2 points from Alex Delaney and Kyle Nolan to put them back in the lead.

As the clock hit the 60 minute mark Podge Ryan sailed over another free to level it up with time up, but Carlow Town would have one last attack from the puc out which fell to John Phiri who sealed the deal for the visitors and put them into the semi final by the narrow of margins.

Kildavin/Clonegal now out of the 2024 championship but can feel that they completed well in this grade and have lots to build on for 2025.
