How MLR played

By Leo McGough

– MOUNT LEINSTER RANGERS –

DEAN GRENNAN: Tipped to safety an early St Mullins goal chance, alert in coming off his, parried a Mouse shot to prevent another early, nothing he could do on the balls that beat him. In the puck-out department though one gifted an opposition point in the second half, many of Dean’s others were productive, very productive, 0-7 coming after his puck-outs of various distances, another from a long clearance having received a pass back.

MICHAEL DOYLE: Busy as always, got on a good bit of ball in the second half and used it well in trying to instigate a Rangers rally in this his 11th final including replays.

MICHAEL JOYCE: Blocked a goal bound Marty Kavanagh free in the first half, tried his best to stem the tide, carrying an injury he was replaced by Diarmuid Byrne at half-time.

SEAN JOYCE: Worked hard against the tide in the first half – 3rd final

RICHIE COADY: Playing in an amazing 20th final (including replays) started at wing back, moved to mid-field, he kept plugging away, assists to two points.

KEVIN McDONALD: 1-2 from placed balls, a long angled delivery of his helped create the first of Chris Nolan’s goals, also involved in the assist to a point. Defensively he was another who did his best to stem the first half tide and was instrumenal too in the second half rally. Playing his 10th final.

TONY LAWLOR: Never gave up, started on the wing, moved to the corner, wherever he was sited Tony gave it his all, fouled for one converted free.

JON NOLAN: A superb individual point, fouled for a scored free, terrific work in the lead up to the brothers goal and general industry all through.

EVAN KEALY: Provided a couple of useful deliveries that served as assists to points, one in either half.

DEAN TOBIN: A straight red card after 8 minutes for going by referee Patrick Murphy’s signals after consultation with the umpires was interference with an opponents helmet. Harsh perhaps but by the letter of the law, correct.

DONAGH MURPHY: A lovely point from tight to the stand sideline, fouled for a scored free, assists to a further 0-2, had a shot for goal saved and a pass for his might have led to a goal too but for Kevin Keheo’s timely intervention.

TED JOYCE: Stuck to process, effectively so, scored 0-7, six frees, a ’65’, three of those frees after he himself was fouled.

JAMIE NOLAN: A surprise starting choice, won a scored free but saw little of the play before being withdrawn at half-time.

EDDIE BYRNE: Fouled for a scored free, assists to 0-2, unlucky to hit the side netting with a goal chance, remained a threat throughout this his18th final (including replays)

CHRIS NOLAN: 2-5 from play and finishes on the losing team, going with Terry Byrne (0-14 in 1972) and Denis Murphy (1-13 in 2019) as supreme sharpshooters in a losing cause with Chris’ probably topping the list given all his scores were from play and that’s before taking in the quality of those scores. Was also fouled for a scored free and had claims for a penalty after another run turned down. Twice used hopping the sliotar off the ground to great effect on searing runs.

DIARMUID BYRNE: Came on at half-time for his 11th final, took up position at full-back and launched a couple of sky-high balls down on the St Mullins goalmouth.

PAUL COADY: Came on at half-time for his 13th final, put in one timely tackle that led to a score, worked hard.

CIARAN KAVANAGH: Came on late in proceedings.

EOIN DOYLE: Came on late in proceedings.
