Leinster U20 Football Championship Round 2

Carlow 0-7

Wicklow 3-11

Carlow started this game in competitive fashion and Wicklow didn’t actually lead until 20 minutes in when Brian Hurley pointed to put them 0-4 to 0-3 up.

The impressive Liam Gavin had bagged a brace of points, one from a free while Brandon Cassidy opened the scoring.

Losing Cassidy early on was a blow to Carlow although his replacement Cillian Fagan pointed a few minutes before the interval but Wicklow had their first goal at this stage through Conor Fee.

The Garden men enjoyed a 1-7 to 0-5 lead at the break with Fee, Paidi Kavanagh and Hurley all pointing, while a good Kyle Nolan score ensured it would only be 5 in it at the interval.

It was tit for tat during the opening minutes of the second half, Brandon Kelly and Liam Gavin again registering big scores, but disaster struck approaching the end of the third quarter when Kavanagh bagged Wicklow’s second major.

Carlow would not score again after this even though they did give it their all in general, but Wicklow added to the misery in injury time when James Boland struck a third goal.

After two consecutive losses, next up for Carlow is an away trip to Wexford on Tuesday.

Carlow Scorers: Liam Gavin (0-3,2f), Brandon Kelly, (0-1), Brandon Cassidy (0-1), Kyle Nolan (0-1), Cillian Fagan (0-1)
