Naomh Eoin 1-19, Naomh Brid 0-8
The early indications in Saturdays’ opening contest indicated that this could well be a game that Naomh Brid could get something from.
In the end it proved to be somewhat of a false dawn.
Despite registering the first two points, Naomh Brid wouldn’t lead the game again from the 7th minute onwards when James Smithers nabbed his second point making it 0-3 to 0-2.
In those opening minutes the Leighlin parish men squandered a goal chance when Aaron Amond lost his footing after John Murphy created the opening. Instead they had to settle for a Fiach O’Toole point.
John Michael Nolan scored two beauties in the opening half which finished with Naomh Eoin ahead by 0-8 to 0-5.
Gavin Ruschitzko (who was well marshalled by the excellent Ros Dermody), Colm Beck and Dwaine Kavanagh from frees were their other contributors.
It must be stated that Naomh Brid’s forwards didn’t do their backs many favours.
Sweeper Mikey Bambrick, Dermody and Kirwan all defended well and supplied great ball in to the forwards, but unfortunately both striking and accuracy was not up to scratch even taking the conditions into account.
Any hopes of a revival in the second half went up in smoke just 30 seconds in when Dylan Kavanagh lashed out with the head after winning a free and received a red card, which he can have no arguments with.
Naomh Eoin already had Dwaine Kavanagh sweeping and now they utilised another free man in the middle third. It was surprising that they opted not to push up on Mikey Bambrick and vice versa but in the end it was immaterial.
Michael Kavanagh, Colm Beck, Scott Treacy and braces from Ger Kavanagh, James Smithers and Cathal Treacy were some of the scores to remark upon for the winners.
Brian Treacy expertly scored a penalty after making a great save from play earlier from a great solo Mikey Bambrick effort and he was to make another afterwards from Aaron Amond which is sure to leave a mark!
Placed balls from Fiach O’Toole (2) and another from Aaron Amond was as good as it got for Naomh Brid whose miserable evening was confirmed when Zach Kelly’s effort hopped off the post and wide.
Naomh Eoin face St Mullins next, with Naomh Brid wrapping up against MLR.
