SCORES BY THE CLOCK – 2024 Carlow Senior Hurling Championship Final

13 seconds: Mount Leinster Rangers goal, Ciaran Kavanagh whipping first time to the net from just to the right of the Deerpark End posts after Eddie Byrne had proved a nuisance in the edge of the square, ‘breaking’ a high Ted Joyce delivery in the scorers direction. 1-0 to 0-1

1: James Doyle with a typical over the shoulder point 20m out having gained possession from a throw-ball opens the St Mullins account. 1-0 to 0-1

4: Donagh Murphy gathers a long ball from Kevin McDonald and on the run through the centre pilots over a sweet Rangers point. From the edge of the D. 1-1 to 0-1.

5: Ted Joyce points from the right corner after Chris Nolan had embarked on one his trademark long solo runs before giving a one-handed stick pass to the scorer. 1-2 to 0-1.

6: Ted Joyce, having missed his first free, converts his second one from 50m, in front of the posts, won by Jon Nolan. 1-3 to 0-1.

7: Donagh Murphy rifles over his second point from just to left of the posts, the ‘assist’ down to a Chris Nolan point shot coming down off the upright and a St Mullins defender mistakenly flicking the loose ball to the scorer. 1-4 to 0-1.

11: Marty ‘Mouse’ Kavanagh opens his account, Ciaran Harris  fouled  just outside big square having taken a pass from the soloing Conor Kehoem having  availed of a flicked pass from ‘Mouse’. 1-4 to 0-2.

12: Jon Nolan lands a lovely point on the run from 50m after a clever pass from Richie Coady who had caught the St Mullins puck-out. 1-5 to 0-2.

14: Mouse points a 50m free from close to the stand side after he himself was fouled having taken a pass from Ciaran Harris. 1-5 to 0-3.

16: Ted Joyce points a close range free from the left of the posts after Eddie Byrne was fouled having won a long ball from a Kevin McDonald free and made a run on goal. 1-6 to 0-3.

18: Chris Nolan with a sweet point from play from the right wing 25m out having intercepted an attempted St Mullins handpass, a clever Kevin McDonald one-handed flick to Jon Nolan who delivered briskly bringing the ball to the danger area.1-7 to 0-3.

20: Mouse points a a free from the edge of the D in front of the posts after he himself was fouled having gained possession from after a diagonal line-ball from  the terrace wing by his brother Jack. 1-7 to 0-4

25: James Doyle another delightful over the shoulder left hand point this one from the 65m line having accepted a pass from Paul Doyle who was without his stick having broken up a Rangers attack. 1-7 to 0-5

26: Ted Joyce points a free  mid-way between the 45m and 65m line, Chris Nolan fouled having gathered a Dean Grennan puck-out. 1-8 to 0-5

27: Jon Nolan point from the angle of 45m line and sideline, a superb team score, Richie Coady winning a long St Mullins delivery in the tunnel corner, hand-passing to Kevin McDonald who threaded a crossfield stick pass to Evan Kealy’s whose long delivery down the stand wing was flicked into the cornerm then picked up by Ted Joyce who from then cleverly sent a long stick back out to the scorer. 1-9 to 0-5.

28: St Mullins goal, Jack Kavanagh, who having gathered a two-handed stick pass from John Doyle, who had received a dink hand-pass from the falling Marty Kavanagh, took aim from just outside the 20m line and the sliotar seemed to take a deflection en route to the low left corner of the net. 1-9 to 1-5.

28: James Doyle a sweet point  from the stand sideline 35m out having been put in possession by a beautifully cut ‘Mouse’ line-ball. 1-9 to 1-6.

29: Eddie Byrne goal, a first time pull from the edge of the small square left of post after a clever Ted Joyce stick-pass fell from his grasp, Ted having made an incisive run having taken a pass from an incisive Chris Nolan run, Kevin McDonald involved twice earlier in the move. 2-9 to 1-6.

30: Jack Kavanagh goal, gaining possession from a long Kevin Kehoe puck-out he made a short run and again let fly from the 20m, another bouncer, this bullet didn’t need the help of a deflection as it sped low to the net. 2-9 to 2-6.

32: Mouse wins the break from the puck out near the the stand sideline, cuts in and from close to half way rifles over a point off his right hand side.

Half-time: Mount Leinster Rangers 2-9, St Mullins 2-7

32: Donagh Murphy points from the 20m line to the left of the posts after availing of a long cross-field lift and strike  from a white helmeted Rangers defender. 2-10 to 2-7.

33: Mouse points a 20 free dead straight in front of the posts, Conor Kehoe fouled. 2-10 to 2-8

37: Mouse point, a wonderful team score, a measured Paudie Kehoe clearance down the terrace wing finds  John Doyle, he cuts in at an angle, hand-passes to Eamonn O’Shea who dinks a short stick-pass to the scorer who races into space before pointing from the 20m to the left off the posts. 2-10 to 2-9

38: Eddie Byrne point after a clever Kevin McDonald line-ball from the terrace wing 30m out was cut into Chris Nolan’s hand on the 20m line and when he lost his stick he hand-passed to the scorer. 2-11 to 2-9

39: A magnificent Ted Joyce point from play from the half-way line, sweeping up a loose ground ball, avoiding a would-be tackle and drifting the ball between the posts. 2-12 to 2-9

41: James Doyle point from close to half-way when having gathered a loose clearance and trying to side-step and opponent he lost possession but Ger Coady rescued the situation and hand-passed to the scorer who made no mistake this time. 2-12 to 2-10

42: Conor Kehoe point on the run from just inside the D, placed by a cleverly quickly taken Mouse free awarded on half-way near the stand sideline for a foul on James Doyle. 2-12 to 2-11

43: A massive Kevin McDonald point from a left wing free inside his own ’65’,  Tony Lawlor fouled and on ‘advantage’ as he attempted a long range effort which just dropped short. 2-13 to 2-11

45: Sub Jason O’Neill with a  point from inside the 20m line to the right of the posts, a score which originated in the right corner of defence, Ger Coady keeping the ball in play at angle of end-line and sideline cleared the ball down the wing, where Conor Kehoe snapped up the break off Jack Kavanagh and embarked on a thrilling run, the ball eventually flicked off his stuck but into the path of the scorer. 2-13 to 2-12

47: Mouse point from a 20m free to the left of the posts to level the sides for the first time Paddy Boland fouled on brillianty catching a long ball from Paudie O’Shea who had been placed by a short Kevin Kehoe puck-out. 2-13 to 2-13

48; Eddie Byrne point after goalkeeper Dean Grennan had exchanged a forced-into one-two with Michael Doyle to the left of the posts, Dean’s long ball, half-caught by the scorer who then managed to gain control with his outstretched stick before turning and twisting away from his markers to shoot over from the edge of the D just outside the 20m line. 2-14 to 2-13

49: James Doyle point, he having snapped up the break from the puck-out of the previous score on the stand wing 45m out and under pressure soled to the 20m line where he swivelled into space to shoot a right hand leveller. 2-14 to 2-14

53: Donagh Murphy point, racing into space and piloting over from just inside the 65m line, this after goalkeeper Dean Grennan picked out  Richie Coady with a short puck-out, Richie Coady lift-and-strike without handling delivery finding the scorer. 2-15 to 2-14

53: Ted Joyce point from a 20m free slightly to the left of the posts after substitute Conaill Fitzpatrick was fouled cutting in on goal, he having availed of Eddie Byrne ‘breaking’ a long high Jon Nolan crossfield ball, Jon having availed of a quick Sean Joyce lift-and-hand-pass. 2-16 to 2-14

55: Tony Lawlor a superb point from half-way after a 20m run, he put in possession by another lift-and-hand-pass, this one by seasoned sub Diarmuid Byrne after another seasoned campaigner Richie Coady had blocked down a St Mullins point attempt on the 20m line, the break rolling Byrne’s way. 2-17 to 2-14

57: James Doyle point, another superb left hand scored, this time from the angle of terrace sideline and 45m line having received a hand-pass from Conor Kehoe who had snapped on to a break from a well-flighted Paul Doyle line-ball. 2-17 to 2-15

59: Chris Nolan point, route one, a long, long Dean Grennan puck-out is caught by Chris Nolan on the 45m line, left wing, takes his steps into space, steadies the feet, over the bar.  2-18 to 2-15

60: Ted Joyce point  from a free, Kevin McDonald having broken up a St Mullins  attack took off on a 40m solo run with a broken stick, broken high on the handle, flicked a pass off the half-stick to Ted Joyce who was fouled on the 55m, 13m in from the terrace sideline and picked himself up to put Rangers four points up. 2-19 to 2-15

62: Mouse points a 55m free after Paddy Boland caught a long ball from Paul Doyle who had been put in possession by a short Kevin Kehoe puck-out. 2-19 to 2-16

63: Mouse goal!  Paudie Kehoe gains possession  outside his own D line after a long Richie Coady ball broke from himself and Eddie Byrne, Paudie drove the sliotar ball downfield, where inside the 45m line Jason O’Neill, at the second attempt, got off a hand pass to Marty Kavanagh on the edge of the D, Mouse cuts into the 13m slightly to the left of the posts, lets fly low and hard, the net bulges, maybe a deflection en route?  

Final Score: Mount Leinster Rangers 2-19, St Mullins 3-16
