4: Owen Wall displays lightning speed as he cuts in from the left corner and dispatches a low shot in the Carlow rigging, the attack instigated by visiting goalkeeper Eoin Murphy after he collected a Fiachra Fitzpatrick point-attempt that dropped short, then a necklace of short passes freeing David Blanchfield to deliver a long cross-field ball Kilkenny 1-1, Carlow 0-0.

6: Tony Lawlor’s cross field to the tunnel corner yielded a line-ball after ‘Mouse’ and a Kilkenny defender contested the dropping sliotar. “Are you going to take it” asked Chris Nolan of his forward colleague, Chris himself a man known to have cut balls over from that 40m distance. Mouse nodded in the affirmative but did’t go for the posts, instead daintily chipping the ball right into Chris Nolan’s hand, Chris going for the posts and finding them, Carlow’s opening score, Kilkenny 1-1, Carlow 0-1

9: Billy Ryan points. Eoin Wall, Tom Phelan and Shane Murphy (clever pass back) involved in the build up. Kilkenny 1-2, Carlow 0-1.

10: Richie Coady shimmies and sidesteps in the middle of the field, steers a superb stick pass to Chris Nolan’s hand, Chris races down the stand sideline, hops the sliotar off the ground and from 60m pilots over his second point. Kilkenny 1-2, Carlow 0-2.

11: Eoin Wall picks off a nice point from the right wing, 30m out having gathered a Darragh Corcoran crossfield ball. Kilkenny 1-3, Carlow 0-2.

12: Cian Kenny drifts over a long range point after a long Carlow ball had been worked out by the visiting defence. Kilkenny 1-4, Carlow 0-2

14: Chris Nolan’s third white flag, this time off his right, 60m out, the assist down a Tony Lawlor intercept and pass. Kilkenny 1-4, Carlow 0-3

15: Cian Kenny knocks over another Kilkenny point after a long hard pass from Martin Keoghan. Kilkenny 1-5, Carlow 0-3

16: Owen Wall points again, a kind of consolation score after Brian Tracey had denied Tom Phelan a goal with a fine save, Martin Keoghan recycling to the scorer. Kilkenny 1-6, Carlow 0-3.

18: TJ Reid, the championship’s all-time top scorer going into this game, opened his account with a 40m free after he himself was fouled, the ace sharpshooter having earlier posted two wides, one from play, one off a free. Kilkenny 1-7, Carlow 0-3.

22: Mouse, Carlow’s all-time top scorer, opens his account with a 40m free in front of the posts, this after Kilkenny championship debutante Killian Doyle was issued with a straight red card by Dublin referee Chris Mooney who consulted with his umpires concerning an incident that left Chris Nolan laying injured on the ground, loose swing if the hurl. Kilkenny 1-7, Carlow 0-4.

26: TJ Reid points a 40m right wing free after Martin Keoghan was fouled. Kilkenny 1-8, Carlow 0-4

27: Fiachra Fitzpatrick rifles over a fine left hand point from the left wing 30m out after Brian Tracey tipped a short suck-out to Dion Wall and having accepted the return pass advanced to the edge of the D before launching a long ball, the break of which rolled to the scorer. 28: TJ points a 30m free after he himself was fouled contesting a long Mikey Butler clearance, Kilkenny 1-9, Carlow 0-5

29: Mouse points a 45m free in front of the posts  won by John Nolan after Kevin Mac had essayed a clever cross field ball, Mac having availed of a return pass from Tony Lawler. Carlow 1-9, Carlow 0-6

31 Mouse points a 60m free after a Kilkenny player, under pressure, threw up the ball and caught it again, the referees whistle slightly delayed and free  Kilkenny 1-9, Carlow 0-7.

32: Just after Chris Nolan had been narrowly wide after a thrilling run down the stand sideline, Owen Wall  points from the left corner having gathered a long delivery from Tom Phelan.  Kilkenny 1-10, Carlow 0-7

37: John Michael Nolan a typical over the shoulder point after good approach work by Richie Coady (a pop pass) and Jack McCullagh (an astute stick delivery) Kilkenny 1-11, Carlow 0-8

38: Mouse points a ’65’ won by dent of a strong Scott Tracey run that might have yielded a goal but for strong Kilkenny defending.

36: Fiachra Fitzpatrick drifts over a point from 30m, slightly to the left of goal after a short puck out by Brian Tracey (after a TJ Reid wide) found Tony Lawlor whose long delivery down the terrace wing was latched on to by Jack McCullagh his cross field ball reaching half-time substitute Paddy Boland who  hand-passed to the scorer. 37: Tom Phelan a long range point after a Huw Lawlor ground flick and John Donnelly pass. Kilkenny 1-12, Carlow 0-10

38: Cian Kenny point from 60m after neat necklace of passes involving Shane Murphy, David Blanchfield and Mikey Butler. Kilkenny 1-13, Carlow 0-10

40: Tom Phelan point from 30m following a hand-pass from Martin Keoghan who had availed of a Carlow error.. Kilkenny 1-14, Carlow 0-10

44: A excellent sideline cut from Kevin McDonald  in the tunnel corner is caught and struck quickly by Conor Kehoe, his diagonal delivery dropping on Paddy Boland who is fouled and Mouse points the 40m  free to the left of the posts, a steadying score. Kilkenny 1-15, Carlow 0-11

46: From his own ’65’ stand side, Kevin Mac magnificently points a long range free won when a Jon Nolan run wall illegally impeded. Kilkenny 1-15, Carlow 0-12

47; A short puck out by Brian Tracey to Kevin Mac, who launches a long ball down field, Mouse snaps up possession and drifts a delightful stick pass to Fiachra Fitzpatrick in the corner, Fiachra’s pin-point cross back to the 20m line caught by Chris Nolan and dispatched left handed over the bar.   Kilkenny 1-15, Carlow 0-13

51: Huw Lawlor, freed by a Cian Kenny pass, shoots a long range point after a good run down the stand wing during which he bounced the sliotar of the ground. Kilkenny 1-16, Carlow 0-14

53: Shane Murphy picks off a mid-distance  point after Conor Fogarty booted the ball in his direction following a line-ball which John Donnelly by error virtually took to himself though a slight deflection made his next play legal. Kilkenny 1-17, Carlow 0-14

54: Mouse, after he himself was fouled contesting a long dropping ball, points a 50m free from the left of the posts. Kilkenny 1-17, Carlow 0-15

55: Brian Tracey denies Kilkenny a goal, first saving from Tom Phelan, then bravely denying Martin Keoghan a touch in of the rebound,

60: A short puck out by Brian Tracey to Niall Bolger, thus time to the right of the posts, Niall launching a long ball that Mouse wins and makes a strong run towards the posts, fouled, advantage doesn’t accrue, so he then pilots over the free from the outside edge of the D. 61: CARLOW GOAL: Jack McCullagh breaks down a long Eoin Murphy puck-out, then manages to get a crucial flick of the stick to steer the slitter to Fiachra Fitz whose long low delivery is fastened on to by Mouse who pops a pass to Conor Kehoe who to roars of “Go Conor go’ races towards the Deerpark end posts, passes inside to Paddy Boland on the edge of the small square but his attempt to net is baulked by the advancing goalkeeper. However the break falls to Conor who clips the ball to the net. Kilkenny 1-17, Carlow 1-16.

66: Martin Keoghan angles over a great point from the tunnel corner after gathering a long diagonal ball. Kilkenny 1-18, Carlow 1-16

68: Chris Nolan wins a sky ball and in cutting towards goal is fouled by Mikey Butler. Mouse points the  free from the 65m line. Kilkenny 1-18, Carlow 1-17

71: A short puck out by Brian Tracey to Kevin McDonald to the right of the posts, Mac launches a long one that drops on the 20m line, James Doyle uses his strength to gains possession and hand passes to Donagh Murphy who left handed slots over the equaliser from the left of the posts, Kilkenny 1-18, Carlow 1-18

72: TJ Reid points a free from 10m inside his own ’65’ after Cian Kenny was fouled having received a radar-like short puck out from Eoin Murphy. Kilkenny 1-19, Carlow 1-18

73: A marvellous TJ Reid point from play, a strike from his own ’65’, not that far in from the sideline having received a hand-pass from David Blanchfield who was suspiciously close to fouling the ball. , Kilkenny 1-20, Carlow 1-18

74: A mid-distance puck-out by Brian Tracey to Kevin McDonald who catches it close to  the stand sideline  and from his own ’65’ drives a long ball towards the Deerpark posts which is magnificently  caught by James Doyle on the 20m line, James then pivoting to rifle over a priceless point. Kilkenny 1-20, Carlow 1-19

77: A long Kilkenny clearance falls in no-mans land, Dion Wall jab lifts the ball and angles  a low cross-field ball towards the stand sideline where Donagh Murphy gives chase and forces Tom Phelan into conceding the line-ball. Phelan though gets possession of the sliotar and tosses it into the stand. The referee, implementing a rule many spectators were unaware off, awarded a free for the ‘delaying’ action, this free 13m forward of the offence. So Mouse stands over a free 5m outside the 45m line, 10m in from the side-line, The last puck of the game … nerves of steel … over she goes … a Draw!
